TANF: ELIGIBILITY – Income Computation Worksheet Examples (Step-Parent)

The following are examples of TANF Income Computation for Step-Parent. (Also applies to income for a Major Mother, Alien Parent, Fleeing Felon Parent and the Spouse of a needy caretaker.

Example 1 – Step-Parent with 1 Child

  1. $3,448.00 (Gross Earned Income from MICAL, i.e. Countable Earned Income)
  2. + $0.00 (Gross Self Employment Income)
  3. – $0.00 (Self Employment Expenses, i.e. 1/2 of Gross Self Employment Income)
  4. – $120.00 (Work Related Deduction)
  5. = $3,328.00 (Net Earned Income)
  6. ÷ 2 = $1,664.00
  7. – $0.00 (Child Care Co-Pay)
  8. = $1,664.00 (Countable Net Income)
  9. + $0.00 (Unearned Income)
  10. = $1,664.00 (Total Income)
  11. – $499.00 (Need Standard for those not included on the case*, i.e. Diverted Income)
  12. – $0.00 (Child Support & Alimony paid to those not in the home)
  13. = $1,165.00 (Amount that counts towards the TANF grant, calculated by the computer)

*Refer to Appendix C-1 Schedule IX to obtain Need Standard Amount. Use need standard for step-parent and one child not included in TANF grant. Diverted Income block will be the Need Standard and child support deduction or the Total income whichever is less. Refer to Policy 340:10-3-57(e).

In this example, the household is not eligible for TANF.

Example 2 – Step-Parent with 1 Child

  1. $935.00 (Gross Earned Income from MICAL, i.e. Countable Earned Income)
  2. + $0.00 (Gross Self Employment Income)
  3. – $0.00 (Self Employment Expenses, i.e. 1/2 of Gross Self Employment Income)
  4. – $120.00 (Work Related Deduction)
  5. = $815.00 (Net Earned Income)
  6. ÷ 2 = $407.50
  7. – $0.00 (Child Care Co-Pay)
  8. = $407.50 (Countable Net Earned Income)
  9. + $0.00 (Unearned Income)
  10. = $407.50 (Total Income)
  11. – $499.00 (Need Standard for those not included on the case*, i.e. Diverted Income)
  12. – $0.00 (Child Support & Alimony paid to those not in the home)
  13. = $0.00 (Amount that counts towards the TANF grant, calculated by the computer)
