SNAP: Job Corps

What is Job Corps?

Job Corps is a federal residential career training program in the country and has been operating for more than 50 years. The program helps eligible young people ages 16 through 24 complete their high school education, trains them for meaningful careers, and assists them with obtaining employment.

The following provides guidelines on determining eligibility for SNAP for Job Corps participants.

Student Eligibility:

For student eligibility purposes the exemption is given for participation in a work program.

Income: 340:50-7-22. ITS #4

Job Corps usually provide a training allowance that is given to participants. The amount can vary depending on the circumstances. This income would not be considered,

 (a) There are numerous programs for which income is excluded.  Some of the more common examples include income received from Youthbuild, Summer Youth, Job Corps, and paid classroom training.  For less common examples, the worker must determine if the program is a federally funded workforce training program.

Meal Plans:

Meals are usually provided with the room and board with Job Corps. If the client receives at least 50% of their meals from Job Corp, they would not be eligible for SNAP as they would be considered institutionalized.
