When you have expenses that are billed to or paid by an ineligible household member then you prorate the expenses evenly between the household members. The countable expenses, is the combined portions of the eligible household members.
Example:
Household consists of 2 adults (undocumented) and 2 children (citizens). Shelter expense is $800 month.
Expense divided by total number of household members finds the individual expense. Then add all the eligible member’s expenses together to get the correct countable expense or multiply the individual expense by the number of eligible household members.
In this example, $800 divided by household members would equal $200 each. Since only 2 members are eligible for food benefits take the $200 multiply by 2 eligible members to get a countable expense of $400 for shelter.
Remember: We never prorate utility expense.
Remember: When a person is disqualified all their income counts, therefore we do not prorate any of their expenses.
