SNAP: Why is SNAP important?

SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, seeks to provide additional nutritional benefits for households in Oklahoma in keeping with OKDHS’s mission to help families’ lead healthier lives. OKDHS staff have many key responsibilities when administering the SNAP Program. Eligibility determination is based on level of need of the household and all applications must be processed in a non-discriminatory manner. The program is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Decisions regarding SNAP eligibility are made and reviewed within established policy and guidelines.

SNAP benefits allow families to have more nutritional options within a framework of allowable and non-allowable purchases. This provides the family some guidance and autonomy in making better nutritional decisions for the family.
