Programs: Expenses Verification Requirements

For SNAP applications, the following five expense types must be verified if they are to be considered in the eligibility determination:

  1. Shelter costs paid by the household
  2. Utility expenses paid by the household
  3. Legally binding child support paid by a household member
  4. Dependent care expenses paid by a household member
  5. Medical expenses paid by an elderly or disabled household member

Verification Process

All allowable expenses are subject to the same verification requirements. To request verification, the agency must issue a Request for Information form (ADM-92) specifying the required documentation for the applicable expenses.  The household must be allowed ten (10) days from the date of the request to provide all necessary verification.

Failure to Provide Verification

If the household does not submit the requested expense verification by the end of the 10-day period, the SNAP application may be processed without including the unverified expenses, provided that all other required verifications have been received.

Verification Received After Certification

If expense verification is submitted after the application has been certified, the expenses may only be added to the case for the next effective date.

A supplement cannot be issued for the current or prior months, as the household forfeited consideration of those expenses by failing to provide verification during the application period by not providing the verification during the 10-day period.
