There will be times that a reported change will affect a household’s eligibility or SNAP benefit amount. If the change causes a household’s SNAP amount to increase, sometimes it is necessary to supplement their benefits, for the month the change occurred. Supplements are issued to ensure each eligible household receives the correct amount of benefit for each month. For each situation, be sure to case note your actions on the case.
The following are examples of SNAP supplements
- Addition of household member
- A client calls their worker on June 3rd to report the birth of their newborn daughter, which occurred on June 1st. The worker makes a change effective July to add household member as this is the earliest month that the change can be made. Worker then processes a supplement for the month of June and documents action in case notes.
- Loss of earned or unearned income
- A client calls their worker on June 3rd to report that his employment ended on May 28th, and later provided verification that he received his last paycheck on May 31. As it is past positive deadline to change for June, a change removing the terminated earned income is made effective for the month of July and worker supplements case for June. The action is then documented in case notes.
- Reduction of income
- A client called their worker on June 3rd to report that they received a smaller amount of child support the past two months. Worker views family group number on KI1 screen and it shows a decrease in the amount of child support amount for the last three months. Worker then makes a change for July to reflect the correct amount of child support that is received. Worker then supplements case for June with the accurate amount of child support and documents action in case notes.
- Re-opening benefits with changes of income effective the next month
- A client submitted a renewal on June 10th in order to re-open SNAP benefits from SNAP 36s closure effective June 01. They also reported to the worker that they switched jobs in the middle of May. Verification of terminated employment and verification of total gross income of last paycheck given to client on June 1st was submitted to worker. Client will receive their first paycheck from the new employment in July. Worker will re-open SNAP using anticipated income for July with new employment and then process supplement for June. All actions are recorded in case notes.
- Medical expense SNAP supplement
- A client receiving QMB benefits called worker on July 5th to report that they paid several medical bills in the month of June, and wanted to request additional SNAP benefits. Client provided copies of receipts to the worker for verification. During telephone call, client states that the paid medical bills are not due on a monthly basis. As they are not recurring expenses, worker did not include them in ongoing medical deduction calculation, but he totaled them up and processed a one -time supplement for June. All calculations and actions are recorded in case notes.
